CES Vestamager, Runde 5 og 6
After some hectic weeks, I finally have an update for you! We have completed two ringing sessions in the last few weeks, and some very hot ones indeed. The season is now halfway through with an important milestone of 200 captures, which is the minimum number of birds we need to catch
5th ringing session
We finally had the first fledglings! Not only that but we had MANY of them! During the second round of the morning we had no less than 33 birds in net number 8. Most of them were young Great Tits that had recently left the nest. Luckily we quickly found a routine and got all the birds safely released from the nets and processed.
The day was generally very diverse and with many young birds of most species listed below. We started out with two fledgling Blackbirds and later a breeding Great Spotted Woodpecker male with his fledgling chick. We also caught the first Dunnock of the year, also a fledgling.
We ended up with a whopping 71 catches for one session! That is the highest number we have had since I joined the site in 2021.

6th ringing session
Compared to the session before, this was somewhat of a let down. At least in the number of birds and number of species. Only 11 birds of four species were captured – what a contrast.
However, we did catch the second record of Grasshopper Warbler of this season! This time we had an adult male showing signs of cloacal protuberance (CP). The last one was not sexed. At least we have some still active breeding birds of this species in the area, and I hope to see more of them or even better some young.
