CES Vestamager, Runde 7 og 8
7th ringing session
Even though it was peak vacation time, I could still rely on Pablo to join me this morning, and it turned out to be a very great one. Would have been the perfect training session for any new ringers, as we had a good and steady flow of birds during the whole morning. Nothing out of the ordinary, but a high number of species, 11 in total.
What was interesting and a bit disturbing was one 1k Blackcap with a very deformed eye and an outgrowth on the head and bill. It looked like some parasitic infection, similar to Trichomonas gallinae, which can spread from parents feeding young and infected nest siblings. I am not sure which kind of diseases like this the warblers get, though. We made sure to clean our hands afterwards.
Lastly, it was nice to have a few more Chiffchaffs; they have not had a great year so far. We have had just as many Blue Tits and over double as many Great Tits.

8th ringing session
Once more, a very nicely paced day with a fine amount of birds – also great for training. This was perfect as Kees and Sebastian got the opportunity to get some birds in the hand.
This day was, however, extraordinary – we caught our THIRD Grasshopper Warbler! This time it was a 1k bird, which means the species has been breeding successfully in the area. I suppose since we have caught two adults, that we have heard the singing more often than last year, and being in the middle of July, that this bird was hatched close by. Such a great catch!
Furthermore, we caught a Marsh Warbler, which is also rather uncommon. We had one last year, but it is not a yearly capture at the site.
Lastly, we once again caught a young Blackcap with outgrowths on and around its bill. IT was caught in the same net as the last one, which for me confirms that some nests in the area have been infected. None of the sick birds were ringed, by the way.
